Welcome to the Foley Economic Development Department
The mission of Foley’s Economic Development Department is to identify, target, and recruit businesses, developers, and retirees to the area and help develop world class facilities for sports tourism and other events while catering to the needs of existing businesses.
Foley, Alabama, located 8 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, serves as the gateway to Alabama's gulf coast. Coastal counties saw over 6 million visitors in 2016. Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches can be found here, as well as a diverse collection of exciting entertainment, sports and retail venues.
The Tanger Outlet located in Foley has nearly 600,000-square-feet of national and international brand stores, making it the number one retail attraction visited along the Alabama coast each year. Foley’s yearly retail sales average is close to $600 million. Within the immediate trade area, retail sales in 2012 totaled over $1.2 billion, making South Baldwin County a very important element of the state’s economic strength.
Even with these impressive stats, Foley is much more than retail. Serving as a commerce hub in the South Baldwin trade area, Foley claims over 20 lending institutions. Our local hospital, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, has received a Gold Quality Achievement Award for the past five years. Major employers are UTC Aerospace Systems, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, Vulcan Inc., Ascend Materials and Riviera Utilities.
The City of Foley is currently developing a Class “A”, AdvantageSite classified, Business Park just off the Foley Beach Express consisting of nearly 300 acres. Foley also owns the former Peavey Electronics building, consisting of over 94,000 square feet. This space will be made available expressly for companies looking to locate to the area.
Foley and its sister cities, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have developed a strong sports tourism market generating more than 60,000 room nights in 2012. This is major focus for the area and Foley has plans to build a 100,000 square foot indoor multi-purpose facility and additional outdoor sports fields to expand the sports tourism business. Our goal is to eventually become one of the top destinations for youth sports tournaments in the country, rivaling Disney World.
Eco-Tourism is also blossoming in the Foley area. Hundreds of acres of beautiful waterfront property are being updated to provide one-of-a-kind hiking, camping, and outdoor sporting experiences. The 500 acres along Graham Creek Nature Preserve has a kayak and canoe launch that leads directly into serene Wolf Bay. This park can also host outdoor sporting events such as archery and cross country runs. Plans are also in motion to provide similar opportunities in Bon Secour and Wolf Creek Park.
Whether a business is looking to relocate or a couple looking to retire, Foley and the South Baldwin area may be the best kept secret in the country. Only 10 miles to the beach, 30 miles to Pensacola, Florida, 45 minutes to the Pensacola Airport and 40 miles to Mobile, Foley is at the center of everything. The mild climate, low property tax, and highly-rated Baldwin County School systems only add to the charm.
