EXERCISE, JAZZERCISE & YOGA WITH LORALEA BLAKE
Regular exercise can prevent or delay diabetes and heart trouble. It can also reduce arthritis pain, anxiety and depression. It can help older people stay independent. There are four main types of exercise and seniors need some of each:
- Endurance activities - like walking, swimming, or riding a bike - which build "staying power" and improve the heath of the heart and circulatory system
- Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss
- Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible
- Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall
Our Jazzercise classes cover each of these by incorporating weights, hula hoops and Zumba into this hour long class. Classes are held on Mondays at 10:00 am and Thursdays at 12:45 pm. Cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for guests.
Yoga is wonderful for anyone but especially for senior adults. It will maintain, stretch, and strengthen your body as you restore and maintain health. If you have a disability, doing simple yoga stretches from a seated position will help you manage the disability and maintain the best condition possible. All you need is a simple straight back chair. The chair is not only used for the seated exercises but can also serve as support for many of the standing yoga postures as well. Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 pm. Cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for guests.
T'AI CHI & QIGONG
The goal of T'ai Chi is to move through a series of choreographed movements, like a very slow martial arts routine, in a state of absolute relaxation. In order to do this, we have to let go of our physical and mental tensions. T'ai Chi is simple and easy to do, yet benefits us on many deep and complex levels. T'ai Chi's slow, relaxed movements incorporate breathing and relaxation techniques that cleanse our mind, body and emotions each time we go through the gentle movements. Each morning, you will find yourself grateful that you're alive and able to practice this cool exercise called T'ai Chi. Our instructor Ron Driesbach has been teaching Tai Chi and Qigong for over 23 years. He is a member of The National Qigong Association and is certified in T'ai Chi for Arthritis. Classes on are Fridays at 9:00 a.m. and cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for guests.
Qigong (Chee Goong) is a Chinese exercise program that involves a series of postures and exercises including slow, circular movements, regulated breathing and focused meditation. Qigong uses slow, deep, regular breathing and relaxed energy movement to work oxygen deeper into the tissues to help strengthen the heart and lungs. The benefits linked to Qigong include greater stamina and vitality, reduced stress, enhanced immune system, improved cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive function, lower blood pressure and less risk of falling. Classes are on Fridays at 10:00 a.m. and cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for guests.
