Q. Can I burn within the City Limits?
A. The requirements for having an open fire within the city limits are as follows with the exception of outdoor cooking and certain ceremonial burns. The area can not be within five hundred feet of a roadway or a structure, there must be a water supply available to control the fire, and only natural materials such as limbs and leaves may be burned. If all these requirements can be met you may contact the fire department business office for more information at 943-1266.

Q. If I do not live within the City Limits can I burn?
A. Open burning outside the City Limits is governed by the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Open burning is not allowed during the months of May through September due to atmospheric and ozone conditions. When burning is allowed only natural vegetation can be burned, no treated or painted lumber or other construction type materials. If the burn area is less than 1/4 of an acre or a pile less than the size of a passenger car then a burn permit is not required. If the area is larger then you may contact the Alabama Forestry Commission at 1-800-672-6912 to receive a burn permit number. They will need the legal description of your property (generally found on your property deed as a Section, Township, and Range). You are required to keep this number with you at all times. It should be noted that you are still responsible for any damage by the fire should it get out of control. Also, if the smoke or debris produced by the fire becomes offensive to a neighbor we will have to extinguish it.

Q. What is the ISO rating for the City of Foley?
A. We proudly have received an ISO rating of 3/8B. If the structure is located anywhere inside the City Limits then the classification is a three. If the structure is located outside the City Limits but is within 1,000 feet of a recognizable fire hydrant, the classification is a three. If the structure is located outside of the City Limits and is over 1,000 feet from a recognizable fire hydrant, the classification is an 8B. We will be more than happy to discuss the rating system with you or your insurance company by calling during business hours at 943-1266.

Q. Will the fire department come speak with my organization about fire prevention?
A. We happily offer public educational programs for any group, school, day care, church, business and anyone else that we can help. We have a wealth of videos and brochures that are free of charge, when we are invited to educate the public.

Q. Can I have an inspection of my home done?
A. We will gladly come to your home and identify hazards that may be present. We also will assist anyone in replacing smoke detector batteries, installing smoke detectors, and advice on fire extinguisher placement.
