The Foley Police Department re-structured in 2007 and now consists of 63 police officers and 29 public servant civilian employees. The Department is organized into Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Support Services Division, and Administration Division. We have one of the highest starting salaries for police officers of our region and the officers are highly productive as well as very approachable by their community. The department uses teamwork across the board, which has contributed to Foley's serious crime being cut in half in four years. We have a Corrections Staff that supervises a 55 bed jail, a 10 person Communications Staff that is our lifeline, and administrative employees that get the job done. In addition to 4 patrol shifts that serve as our first line of defense, we have a Professional Development Unit, a Bike Unit, a DUI Unit, a K-9 Squad, a Special Response Team, a Community Services Unit, a Community Outreach & Development Unit, a Police Fusion Center, a Code Enforcement Unit, a School Resource Officer program, an Accident Investigations Unit and a 13 person Detective Unit. The department also uses an Employee Ideas Team as well as a Police Futuristics Team. The rank structure for the department consists of 9 Corporals, 8 Sergeants, 4 Lieutenant’s, 5 jail supervisors,5 dispatch supervisors, a Deputy Chief and Chief of Police. The City of Foley only accepts employment applications when there is an advertised opening within the department. The hiring process is in depth and tough as well as highly competitive.
Police Hiring Process: From time to time, we will open up the hiring process and advertise an opening. We usually hire certified police officers in-state or out-of-state. From time to time, we do advertise for "rookie" officers with no experience. That decision is made by the Police Chief at that time based on department needs and is stipulated in the advertisement. For certified officers: after the application close out, we look at the applications closely for those that are very qualified and establish a roster of applicants. We then take a group of these applicants and process them. This includes a criminal history check, driving history check, written exam, oral board in front of the Command Staff, in-depth background check, polygraph exam, Executive Interview with the Police Chief, city level background check, drug screening and medical exam. Along the way, we do cut applicants. If the position(s) is not filled then we continue this process with the next group of applicants until the position(s) is filled and so on and so forth or until the roster is exhausted. We enjoy the employment of high quality and talented police officers due to our stringent hiring and selection process. It is difficult to hire on with us and we make no apologies for that. We are very blessed to have the police family we do and look forward to new members. If the applicant is a rookie applicant- then they can expect a PT test (APOST Standards) and a psychological examination added to this process. This hiring process usually takes 2 to 3 months depending on certification or not. We do try to accomplish as much of the process as possible in one to two visits by our applicants traveling great distances. We do know the expenses involved and I have yet to meet many rich cops. We have hired sharp police officers from all over the nation who have joined our sharp police force. Good luck to you and we look forward to meeting you during this process.
